Your first visit will begin with a discussion about your medical history and the reason for your appointment. This will be followed by a physical examination, and in some cases, imaging may be requested to help assess your condition. Based on this assessment, the chiropractor will provide a diagnosis and explain whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you. They will outline a recommended treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. If treatment is suitable, it may begin during the same visit. Should your condition require care from another healthcare professional, the chiropractor will make the appropriate referral.

Yes. Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies for treating musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. While all healthcare treatments carry some level of risk, the risks associated with chiropractic care are very low. Chiropractors are highly trained healthcare professionals who use specific techniques to improve joint function, reduce pain and support the body's natural healing processes.
A chiropractic adjustment is a gentle, highly specialised manipulative technique. It involves a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust, meaning a quick, precise and controlled force applied to a specific joint in the spine or body. Chiropractic adjustments can help to improve joint range of motion, restore joint function, reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
The popping sound you hear during a chiropractic adjustment is not your bones cracking. Instead, it is caused by gas bubbles being released within the joint. Each joint is surrounded by a fluid called synovial fluid, which contains dissolved gases. This fluid helps lubricate the joints and allows them to move smoothly. When a chiropractor adjusts a joint, the pressure inside the joint space changes suddenly. This shift causes the gases to form bubbles or collapse, creating the familiar popping or cracking sound. It is similar to the sound you hear when cracking your knuckles.
Chiropractors undergo extensive university-level education and training. In South Africa, chiropractic can be studied at the University of Johannesburg or Durban University of Technology. The programme takes approximately six years to complete and leads to a master’s degree in chiropractic.
The training includes a strong foundation in medical sciences such as anatomy and physiology, followed by clinical subjects related to diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal conditions. Students also complete research projects and practical clinical internships, where they gain hands-on experience treating patients under supervision.
Chiropractors help with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint pain, posture issues, and sport-related injuries. They also treat conditions such as sciatica, scoliosis, arthritis, and TMJ disorders. Chiropractic care focuses on improving joint function, reducing pain and supporting overall well-being.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. For certain assessments or treatments, you may need to remove outer layers like jackets or scarves. If the knees, hips or legs are being treated, it's best to wear shorts or clothing that makes it easy to treat the area.
Bring any relevant medical information such as X-rays, MRI scans, or past medical reports. This helps ensure an accurate assessment and provide the best care.

Chiropractic care can be provided for acute issues, long-term conditions, or preventive health. This means the number of visits can vary depending on your condition, overall health, and personal goals. Some patients only need care for a specific issue, while others choose ongoing care to maintain overall well-being. During your first visit, we’ll discuss your goals and create a care plan that works for your body and your lifestyle.
